Pehli Baarish: the smell of the first rain, bottled in Kannauj

Pehli Baarish is the AMAVAS fragrance built on mitti attar, the Kannauj distillation that captures the smell of the first monsoon rain on hot earth. It is petrichor as a perfume: baked clay, wet dust, khus vetiver and a cool mineral rain accord, at 20% parfum concentration.

What mitti attar is

In Kannauj, perfumers bake discs of local clay, place them in copper stills and distil them over sandalwood oil. The result smells exactly like the first ten minutes of rain on a dry street. The technique is centuries old and exists nowhere else. Pehli Baarish is built around it.

How it is composed

  • Opening: the mineral rain accord, cold and clean, like the air before the downpour.
  • Heart: copper-distilled mitti attar, the wet-earth note itself.
  • Base: khus vetiver, rooty and green, which is what the earth smells like an hour later.

Who it is for

Anyone who waits for the monsoon. It is the freshest of the four, and the one that reads most clearly as Indian to an Indian nose and most unusual to everyone else.

How long it lasts

20% concentration, wear-tested in heat and humidity. Earthy notes hold well in humid weather; expect the vetiver to carry it through the day.
