Amavasya is the new-moon night in the Hindu lunar calendar, the one night in each cycle with no visible moon. AMAVAS takes its name from it and releases its fragrances on the Diwali amavasya, because Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on the darkest night of the year.
The darkest night of the year
The lunar month runs from one new moon to the next. Purnima is the full moon; amavasya is its opposite, when the moon sits between the earth and the sun and shows nothing. In the month of Kartik, that night is Diwali. Households light rows of lamps precisely because the sky offers none.
Why the house is named after it
Most Indian names for the new moon carry a shadow of superstition; people avoid starting things on amavasya. The house takes the opposite view. The lamps are lit on the darkest night. Light is born on the darkest night. That is the line on our door, and it is why the bottle is black glass with a silver moon for a cap.
